Knowing how to call colors in Japanese would always help to break the ice with your first timer students.

This time, we go over names of colors.
Even without knowing how to direct your students in Japanese during your lessons, you can say names of colors to imply what you want him/her to do.
Also, even outside of your lessons, you may find it interesting to learn basic names of colors in Japanese.

Names of colors

	Red	aka	あか
	Orange	orenji	おれんじ
	Yellow	kiiro	きいろ
	Lime	kimidori	きみどり
	Green	midori	みどり
	Skyblue	mizuiro	みずいろ
	Blue	ao	あお
	Purple	murasaki	むらさき
	White	shiro	しろ
	Black	kuro	くろ

Note

Note that sometimes you have to make a little adjustment on those nouns we just learned.
Especially when you want to turn them into adjectives.
ao ⇒ aoi
kiiro ⇒ kiiroi
midori ⇒ midorino
aka ⇒ akai
orenji ⇒ orenjino
kuro ⇒ kuroi
kimidori ⇒ kimidorino
As you can see here, words that end with an i tend to have “no” at the end when they become adjectives, while the others require only “i” at the end.

mizu iro no botan wo oshite kudasai.
skyblue = “mizuiro”

The theme color of weblio is orange.

ウェブリオのテーマカラーはオレンジです。
weblio no te-ma kara- ha orenji desu.
orenji = “orange”

Your face is blue.

顔が青いですよ。
kao ga aoi desuyo.
blue = “aoi” as an adjective. This is a Japanese expression to say “you look pale.”

He has black eyes.

彼は黒い目をしている。
kare ha kuroi me wo shiteiru.
black = “kuroi” as an adjective.

Clouds are white.

雲は白い。
kumo ha shiroi.
white = “shiroi” as an adjective.
